California City is very popular with off-road enthusiasts.  OHV activity is centered around Borax Bill Park in the eastern half of the city.  The area consists mostly of undeveloped private lots that are part of a development laid out in the 1960s. Roads and designated routes take riders through creosote scrub, teaming with life, and wide-open views of the land for a hundred or more miles. (Be mindful to stay on designated routes to avoid trespassing on private property.) On holiday weekends the OHV population grows to 10,000 plus.  Jawbone Canyon is right "next door."
